A study on the oral health problems and cognition in the elderly

Abstract
Objective : This study aimed to investigate the perception about oral health and cognitive status among Koreans using the data from the Community Health Survey (CHS).

Methods : We examined the differences in the perceptions about oral health and cognitive status of 69,330 of the 2019 CHS. The sample was divided into groups and define the names of each group. Participants¡¯ demographic characteristics were analyzed using frequency, and cognitive problem and sleep problem parameters were analyzed with t-tests.

Results : There were significant differences in subjective oral health, experience of mastication discomfort, between with cognitive problem group and without cognitive problem(p-0.00). There were significant differences in subjective oral health, experience of mastication discomfort, between dementia screening test group and do not have dementia screening test group(p-0.00).

Conclusion : As a result of the study, it was possible to identify oral health and cognitive problems in the elderly. These results could be used as a basis for preparing oral health programs in cognitive intervention.
